Why it is important to gain your Health and Social Care Qualifications?

Jessica Dunn, Office Manager at Katherine Harriet explores why it is important to gain your Health and Social Care Qualifications

Whether you are new to care, or have been in care for many years, qualifications in Health and Social care can play an important role in learning and development. Qualifications can range from diplomas to smaller awards and certificates which are more focused on specific topics.

CQC Commitments, Regulation 18: Staffing

At Katherine Harriet, we are regulated by the Care Quality Commission, this is due to our services providing personal care to our Clients. As part of our commitment to CQC, we follow the Key Questions and Quality Statements. Underneath the Key Question, SAFE, there is a quality statement relating to Safe and Effective Staffing, this sets out that we must have enough qualified, skilled and experienced people, who receive effective support supervision and development. A regulation that falls under this is, Regulation 18: Staffing, this regulation sets out that we must support staff to obtain appropriate qualifications that allows them to perform their role.

What qualifications can I complete?

Many staff will complete an apprenticeship based qualification which allows them to gain their Diplomas, these range from level 2, 3, 4 and on to Level 5 in Leadership Management for Adult Care. This allows staff to continue working alongside completing their qualification. Some individuals complete an Honours degree at university level, this is usually when individuals are solely in full time education based or on open university.

When you first join the care sector, completing your Care Certificate is usually the first step in starting your qualifications pathway, the Care Certificate is an agreed set of standards that define knowledge, skills and behaviours expected of specific job roles in this sector, this is made up of 15 standards.

Over time you will also have opportunities to complete specific specialist areas including; Parkinsons, Dementia, Learning Disabilities, End of Life, Autism, Behaviour that Challenges and much more. At Katherine Harriet we work with certified third parties who will assign you a dedicated assessor, and you will be guided through the coursework to gain a nationally recognised certificate.

Career progression

Career progression starts with experience, skills, and knowledge, part of this can be a requirement for qualifications of a certain level. If you are thinking of enhancing your career and wanting to broaden your skills within the healthcare sector, gaining your qualification can be vital, it also shows and gives you a better chance, of being accepted into new workplaces or new courses of higher education.
